My number one rule - 🙅🏼‍♀️NO FACES NEAR FACES🙅🏼‍♀️

For both adults and children, this is the number one rule! Just don't do it. Don't put your face near dogs' faces. In my job, I have seen many face bites, and one of the common denominators is obviously that the person's face was too close to the dogs.

Unless you REEALLY know a dog and what they like, and can read dog body language, just don't do it. And teach your children to absolutely never do it. No faces near faces.

Signs that a dog may be uncomfortable could look like:

- Lip licking
- Turning thier head or body away
- Stiffness or stillness
- Seeing the whites of a dog's eyes (whale eye)
- Yawning
- Panting
- Tense face

There are lots more, but obviously growling or showing teeth are right up there!

😈 A hill I will die on

‘Stay’ is an unnecessary word that humans add in after asking their dog to do a behaviour because they think they are communicating with their dog that they want them to remain in a position for longer

Dogs don’t understand English - you could say ‘bananas’ and it’d achieve the same thing…and that is basically just making all your position cues two words when they could just be one

When you ask your dog to ‘heel’ you don’t keep saying ‘stay’ afterwards because you want them to remain in heel

✨Toggle with the 3 Ds (distractions, distance and duration) when you want to make a behaviour more difficult

✨Show your dog they’re getting it right through using a continuation marker like ‘good’ which means ‘you’re doing a great job, keep going, I’ll bring the food to you’

Convince me otherwise! I am stubborn but I will concede if someone makes a good enough argument 🤣

Roberta struggles to meet new people, particularly when they come into her house. She primarily struggles with people moving in the home. She has had some incidents that meant her mum reached out for help.

We started with online coaching and whatsapp support before I could see her in person. This meant we already had a great head start and could make the most of the in person session as her mum had put in some great foundations and stayed in touch almost daily.

We were able to put her new stranger protocol into place to help Roberta feel safe and her mum feel confident ❤️.

Using this protocol, I was able to move around the home and come and go as well as give her fuss.

Her mum has hit the ground running and is now testing this out with new people to expand Roberta's world!

We have a few more things to work through, but this was amazing progress!

🐾 KOVU 🐾

Kovu is a 3.5 year old male catahoula leopard cross. His owners reached out after moving here from Spain and noticing that Kovu was struggling with reactivity to dogs and fast moving things (joggers, scooters etc.). He also has a very strong prey drive towards foxes, cats and other small furries!

His owners have tried to address this using obedience like ‘look at me’ and ‘sit’ commands when they spotted something he might react to, however Kovu was unable to respond when he went over threshold (which happened pretty quickly).

We had an online session a couple of weeks ago and I gave the family some pre work to do - I like to do this as it can make a huge difference to how productive our in person sessions are. For example, establishing a solid marker that the dog is motivated for can take a week or so to build and it’s something that the owner can easily do for a few minutes each day before I can make it to them in person.

Kovu did amazingly well in our in person session this week, we were able to identify the early signs that he was struggling with a trigger (for some dogs this is really subtle but it’s obvious when you know what you’re looking for!). As a result of intercepting at an early stage, and with the benefit of a powerful marker, we were easily able to interrupt reactions and redirect him.

This is just our starting point - there’s lots more we will be doing to help Kovu on his training journey.

But if your dog is struggling to follow commands when they are triggered - it’s worth remembering that reactivity is not a ‘thoughtful’ process - the dog is not in a ‘thinking’ state of mind. Therefore, unless your commands are reflexive (the dog can do them without thinking about them) - and most people’s are not - your dog is going to struggle to ‘perform’.

Proofing behaviours is a huge concept in our @jurassicgrc club. We increase the challenge of distractions and ensure we are practising behaviours in varied contexts.

Can your dog listen when you're sitting down, holding things, in a new location? If not, build up the distractions slowly and start getting creative!

Using the child to help with some proofing! Unless your dog can generalise a behaviour, then it isn't reliable.

🍯 HONEY 🍯

Honey is a very cool dog! Her owners have worked super hard on training inside the home (she can be veryyy excitable around visitors) and do their best to fulfil her on a daily basis.

She’s registered under the XL Bully ban so can’t go off lead or unmuzzled, and they don’t have a garden, but she gets 3 walks a day during the week, and a 3 hour walk at weekends where the whole family do a circuit of every park in their local area 🥰

She’s into food and toys but her biggest motivation is other dogs! She is very friendly but having an over friendly dog can make walks challenging.

Honey wasn’t getting much play with her owners as she’s so strong and very destructive with toys - and of course the muzzle on walks makes that tricky too! So our first focus was to figure out a way to incorporate some biologically fulfilling but structured play time.

We introduced a clear window for expressing play drive and a signal to switch this off and relax. And we played around with both toys and food to turn both into a ‘game’. We even managed to adapt the muzzle to enable Honey to play with a toy on her walks!

Now that we’ve figured all of this out, it’ll be much easier to redirect her away from other dogs. These additional outlets will also lessen the value she places on other dogs as she’s getting to channel her playful side into her owners instead 🥰

💙 MAX 💙

Max is a large bull breed cross who was rescued by an experienced staffy owner. Sharon got in touch with us as Max’s zest for life was making walks challenging! He loves every person and every dog he meets, but sometimes loves them a bit too much 🤭

We initially worked together on a 121 basis on loose lead walking, recall, disengagement from dogs, jumping up at visitors, food motivation, play skills and whatever else cropped up throughout adolescence! Max then joined our Social Responsibility group classes (as part of our Jurassic GRC dog sports club) in February this year which has allowed his owner to fine tune their training in a controlled setting and in different environments, as well as become more confident in her handling.

Sharon came to the last class bursting with pride as Max had been to the vets earlier that week and laid down calmly in the waiting room whilst they waited to be seen, despite the people and other dogs 🥰

He also managed to greet everyone without any jumping up last week and was our demo dog for one of the exercises!

We also did some confidence building around the slat mill - he can be a bit spooked by novelty and working through this carefully is a great way to build confidence and develop resilience. Since Max is registered as an XL Bully, he can’t go off lead, so hopefully he will enjoy running on the mill after a few more sessions.

Very proud of this dog-owner team and how far Max has come! Looking forward to seeing his continued development at our weekly classes 💙

In today's SR class we worked on greeting people, loose lead walking, marker discrimination and down stays.

Everyone needed something a little different and we tailor our sessions to the dog and handler teams.

Teaching Judge to speak as an activation behaviour and to add more pep into our play and training.

Judge only barks in a vehicle, or if he's in a crate and he can hear certain noises (most specifically @libbithedogtrainer making popcorn 🍿...) but otherwise he is pretty quiet.

I've been teaching him to speak as an activation behaviour as I want him to be a little more pushy with play specifically.

I doubt he played a proper game or any tuggy games in the 5 years he was in police kennels, so play is fairly new to him and he's got to be in a certain mood.

He loves his new @modogoonline toy, and I'm so pleased he is now properly tugging with me. He was initially very deferent and thought I wanted to toy, so I've built him up with quick wins and rewarding effort. The spring pole has also massively helped as he is wild for a hide!

Anyway, I'm proud of my boy and wanted to show him off to you all 🥰.

I saw the most awful moment the other day. Two women were walking with a dog who was screaming and panicking, wearing a tight mesh muzzle. He then crocodile rolled and lay on the ground, panting and frozen in panic.

I walked over to offer help and a spare appropriate muzzle. One of the women then told me she was a dog trainer and he was just being a drama queen. He wasn't. He was petrified. They refused my help, and I had to walk away.

Just because someone is a dog trainer does not mean you have to listen to them. Particularly when it's causing your dog severe distress and it doesn't make sense.

We would never put you or your dog in a position like above, but we still encourage you not to follow us (or any trainer) blindly. Ask questions. Ensure things make sense. Feel free to say you feel uncomfortable, and can it be explained better or the methods changed.

We are the experts, but it's part of our job to make things make sense for you and your dog.

Arlo screams to get on the mill and the training we do for it is more on getting him to be able to think clearly around the mill than it is to run on it!

We do it FOR them, with them... not TO them.

I know better than anyone that just because your dog is a rescue, this does not give you an excuse not to train them. I'd argue it's even more of a reason to get stuck in!

Judge spent 5 years in police kennels. He has his issues. But we train every day. We both love it!

Being a large bull breed means the expectations are higher, but his rescue status does not give him a free pass!
